Posts of the meme typically show a movie of a field of study, whether it be a production or a person, with a miniature of that subject as the "son" and the use of the phrase "Don't talk to me or my son ever again". The Verge identified it as the "meme of the summer" of 2016.

The first employ of the phrase "Don't talk to me or my son ever once more" online was in a 2014 Tumblr mail service past user splendidland. The mail showed red-colored text displaying the phrase over a screenshot of Spike Spiegel in the anime Cowboy Bebop side by side to a smaller-sized duplicate of the character. The "son" referred to the miniature of Spiegel.
